COVID-19: TOP 8 FOODS TO EAT & DRINK TO EASE ANXIETY

Are you super anxious about this pandemic? Are your anxiety levels through the roof? You’re not alone. My anxiety tends to be off the charts sometimes too. We just have to continue to put one foot in front of the other and know that this too shall pass. BUT in the mean time I wash my hands often or sanitize them, clean frequently touched surfaces, wear my mask when going out, and pray about the things that are beyond my control. I also eat certain foods to help reduce my anxiety. Here’s a list of some foods and drink that I eat and drink to cope with anxiety:

Berries

Strawberry, Raspberry, Blueberry, Blackberry, Cranberry – It is an anti-inflammatory, antioxidant that improves cognition and boosts “feel good” chemicals serotonin and dopamine, which helps relieve stress and reduce anxiety. If you’re allergic or don’t like you can get the same benefits from walnuts, nuts, and green vegetables.

Green Tea

It contains L-Theanine which promote brain health, improve sleep, reduce fatigue, and reduce anxiety. It also contains a flavonoid called epicatechin which help protect your brain from oxidative damage due to negative effects that stress has on your body. It also improves your memory.


‼TIP: Drink plenty of water.


Oysters

It contains zinc which is a mineral that helps the body deal with stress and vitamin B12 which reduces brain shrinkage. If you’re allergic or don’t like oysters you can get zinc from beef, cashews, liver, poultry, and eggs. Eat an oyster a day to keep the anxiety away!

Oranges

Oranges and any other citrus fruit has vitamin c which calms you and puts you in a healthier mind frame. The scent of citrus has the ability to improve your mood as well.


‼TIP: Remember to eat in moderation and don’t over indulge in foods because it will have the opposite effect and increase anxiety.


sardines

It contains omega 3 fatty acids which helps ease inflammation in the brain. As a result this helps with depression, anxiety, and the prevention of it. If you don’t like sardines you can eat salmon or tuna.

cabbage

It contains folic acid, vitamin c, and B Vitamins which help ease anxiety. If left to ferment(stew) in it’s own juices it becomes sauerkraut which has “good” bacteria. Good bacteria helps keep your gut super healthy. It also plays a part in making serotonin; the “feel good” chemical that calms your brain.


‼TIP: Pay attention to food sensitivities.


turmeric

A spice that contains curcumin which is an antioxidants that boosts omega 3 fatty acids. Omega promotes brain health and is known to reduce anxiety. It also stimulates the “feel good” chemicals serotonin and dopamine in the brain which can improve your emotional well-being.

dark chocolate

An antioxidant that lowers blood pressure, boosts blood flow to the brain and heart which makes you less anxious. Caffeine *may* be in dark chocolate so too much will make you anxious. It should be at least *70 % cocoa. It does contains sugar so be mindful if you are on a diet. Don’t over do it. Example: 1/4 of a Hershey Chocolate bar is a fair amount for consumption to reduce anxiety.


‼TIP: Limit caffeine consumption.
